Shazam’s future in the DC Universe depends on Fury of the Gods

The Shazam: Fury of the Gods director says the character has a future in the new DC Universe, but audiences need to show up for the sequel.

As the new DC Universe takes shape, it’s unclear which elements of the existing franchise will survive. The next DC movie to hit theaters will be Shazam: Wrath of the Godsand director David F. Sandberg said that Shazam could have a future in the new DC Universe… but it all depends on how the sequel performs at the box office.

“Hey David, I don’t feel like watching the movie because of the drama that’s happening at the DC studios,“A Twitter user wrote. “It just destroys the atmosphere of the film. There is a lot of uncertainty about DC’s future. Just give us an answer if Shazam will have a role in future DCUs.In response, David F. Sandberg said:He definitely won’t if people don’t see the film. I’ve been told that nothing in the Shazam films contradicts future plans for DC. So the opportunity for more Shazam is there, and if you want that, your best bet is to watch the movie.“

So if Zachary Levi’s Shazam has any chance of a future, wrath of the gods gonna need some butts in the seats. Right now, the sequel isn’t doing too well on the box office, with current projections putting the film at a $35-40 million domestic debut. The first film debuted at $53.5 million.

Zachary Levi has previously said he will not be recast. Levi also defended DC Studios’ James Gunn when fans began criticizing him for his decisions regarding the franchise. “You have no idea what reasons are behind any decisions,‘ Levi said. “The amount of conjecture and rumor mill and drama and nonsense that keeps being spun around out there on Instagram and Twitter is ridiculous. It’s incredibly ridiculous. So I would just say be patient and give them some space and some time to try and make something really special. And I think something DC deserves and something that [Zack] Snyder tried, and it just didn’t work out in the end, folks.“

Shazam: Fury of the Gods will hit theaters 17. March.
