Shocking moped narrowly misses being hit by 70mph trains as it dodges obstacles

This is the horrific moment when two drivers on a moped are narrowly run over by a train traveling at 110 km/h after the driver bypassed the barriers.
The incident was caught on February 21 by security cameras at the level crossing near Littlehampton, West Sussex.
The moped driver ran the red light, committed a crime and caused a delay in the south train’s passengers.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the British Transport Police (BTP) via SMS to number 61016 quoting log 411 dated 02/21/23.
The driver of the Brighton to Southampton service at 2.30pm made an emergency stop and collected himself before continuing the journey.
The incident happened at 3.09pm at the Toddington Junction on a stretch of the 70 mile railway between Angmering and Ford/Littlehampton.
Network Rail Route Director for Sussex Lucy McAuliffe said: “We came very close to having two fatalities on our railway last week and one train driver lives with the memories of that.
“We’re trying to make our network as secure as possible, but we need people to work with us by looking out for red lights and barriers.
“We need to track these people down and make sure they know the consequences of their actions.”
BTP Inspector Emma Boulton said: “Put simply – this is some of the most stupid and reckless level crossing behavior I have seen in my entire career.
“These drivers openly ignored the red light ahead and were just a fraction of a second away from a truly catastrophic collision that would undoubtedly have had fatal consequences.
“This footage should serve as a very stark reminder of the dangers of abusing level crossings.”
Samantha Facey, Southern’s director of health and safety said: “This video is amazing. Today we could speak of a double death, with all the misery and heartbreak that would inflict on bikers’ families and friends.
“And think of our driver: nobody should have to suffer this trauma and none of our passengers should be endangered in this way.
“Unfortunately we’ve also seen an increase in unauthorized young people on the railways – it’s an incredibly dangerous place so please please please stay off the tracks.”
The Toddington Level Crossing is an automatic half-barrier crossing that operates automatically, with lights flashing, sirens sounding and barriers lowering 27 seconds before trains cross the road.
The barriers extend halfway down the lane so no one can get trapped behind them if they land on the intersection.
