Song data startup Session, co-founded by Max Martin, ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Niclas Molinder, is collaborating with Brazilian collecting society UBC

Swedish song data startup Session has teamed up with Brazilian collecting society UBC (Brazilian Union of Composers).

As part of the year-long exclusive partnership, Session’s Session Studio app will be made available free of charge to all UBC members, allowing them to capture song and recording data at the time of creation and share that data with executives, labels, publishers, CMOs and others digitally Service provider.

Founded in 1942, UBC represents more than 50,000 members, including authors, artists, musicians, publishers and record labels.

Session was founded in 2019 by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus and Swedish songwriters and record producers Max Martin and Niclas Molinder with the aim of tackling inadequate data collection.

The company’s collaboration app, Session Studio, can be accessed on mobile and desktop devices. Session Studio is embedded in Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) to capture song information and data at the time of creation.

Back in October, Session partnered with SoundCloud to enable the latter to digitally receive both song audio and song metadata directly from the Session Studio app.

SoundCloud artists can go into their Session Studio profile and securely connect it to their SoundCloud account by entering the same credentials.

An estimated $655 million in royalties are awarded each year (£500 million) are not paid to the correct rights holders due to incorrect data.

Session and SoundCloud support Credits Due, a global initiative launched by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus to ensure that all recordings are accompanied by complete and accurate song metadata at the time of creation.

BMG became one of the first international music companies to join the initiative, and alongside SoundCloud, the likes of Hipgnosis and Kobalt Music Publishing have joined listed among the supporters of the campaign.

“The Brazilian market has shown impressive growth in recent years, so partnering with the leading CMO – an organization that consistently prioritizes the health and wealth of its creators – bodes well for both the Latin American market and the industry at large. “

Molinder added, “We know the digital music industry will grow at over 10% each year, so this is an exciting step forward in ensuring no creator is left behind.”

“UBC’s partnership with Session is a project aimed at making life easier, not only for our members but also for their partners in music.”

Marcelo Castelo Branco, UBC

Marcelo Castelo Branco, CEO of UBC, added: “UBC’s partnership with Session is a project that aims to make life easier, not only for our members but also for their music partners. It’s an app that captures the audio, lyrics, and most importantly, the credits of everyone involved in the song.

“This data can then be transmitted digitally to industry players such as author societies, record labels, publishers, aggregators, etc. A push of a button is enough. That education, action and respect for the proper recognition of everyone who contributes to a song is a priority at both UBC and Session.”
