The new Bob Marley film “One Love” will be released next year. But in the meantime, you can rock out with another Marley.
Stephen Marley is releasing his new album Old Soul this Friday and we got to jam with him during his rehearsal session at his studio in Miami.
In Stephen Marley’s new single “Old Soul” he walks down memory lane. The music video features some personal images including his legendary father Bob Marley.
Stephen Marley: “Speaking of “From 1972,” where I was born, you know, the song itself is about my life and these images take you from my young age to the present.”
This is a different sound than what people are used to from the singer.
Stephen Marley: “I’ve become old-fashioned, but at the same time, you know, it’s our spirit that even the little ones are drawn to. You can feel that drum, that bass drum, that nyabinghi starting to drum. When the melody of the guitar hits exactly that, it breaks all boundaries and genres.”
His new album, also called “Old Soul,” features some familiar sounds like “I Shot the Sheriff” with Eric Clapton.
Stephen Marley: “Over the years a relationship has developed through our work. I have great respect for him as a musician and artist and for the history with my father and music.”
You’ll also hear “There’s a Reward,” a song by Joe Higgs, Bob’s musical mentor.
Stephen and his big brother Ziggy took Joe’s song and brought it back to life.
Stephen Marley: “It is a great honor to bring Joe to a new generation of young people. I know I speak for Ziggy too. It’s a great honor and it’s a great song.”
He’s taking that grounding sound on the road with a national tour.
I wonder if there will be any other Marleys on stage with him?
Stephen Marley: “You know how it works. You know how it works. If you see one, you might see them all.”
Stephen Marley: “The vibration where you can take a moment and let yourself be carried away by the music. When the flute beats with the drums you see there and the bass drums, that’s our versatile mood, but it’s also healing. I personally find it healing.”
Stephen’s “Old Soul Tour: Unplugged” is now in major US cities through the end of October. But I won’t meet SoFlo.
