Stray film based on the atmospheric video game in the works in Annapurna with the director of Ice Age
Annapurna Animation is planning an adaptation of the Stray film inspired by BlueTwelve Studio’s cat-friendly sci-fi adventure video game.
We have news that will have cat owners and gamers purring with anticipation! stray, the award-winning adventure game from developers BlueTwelve Studio, gets an Annapurna film adaptation! Accordingly Weekly entertainmentAnnapurna Nimona is a major hit for the studio, now Annapurna animation gives the green light to several projects, including a new project by Nimona Co-director Nick Bruno and the stray film adaptation of ice age Director Chris Wedge.
“Lost, alone and separated from her family, a stray cat must unravel an ancient mystery to escape a long-forgotten city.” read the official synopsis of the game. “stray is a third-person cat adventure game set amidst the detailed, neon-lit alleyways of a decaying cybercity and the grim surroundings of its seedy underworld. Roam the environment high and low, defending yourself against unforeseen threats and solving the mysteries of this unwelcome place inhabited by curious droids and dangerous creatures.
See the world through the eyes of a cat and interact with the environment in a playful way. Be stealthy, nimble, silly and sometimes as annoying as possible with the strange denizens of this mysterious world.
Along the way, the cat befriends a small flying drone known only as the B-12. With the help of this new companion, the duo must find a way out.”
“This game is all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it.” Narrated Robert Baird, Co-Head of Annapurna Animation EW. “It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot and the dynamic is so hilarious. So there’s a certain comedy to it, but there’s not a single human in this film. I think that’s one of the reasons the game was incredibly popular, because you see the world from an adorable cat’s point of view. How did you do it and how are you doing? We will you be able to do that in the movie? We willeven if it feels impossible at times, we know that this is the essence of the game and the key to telling the story.”
stray was released in 2022 to overwhelming success when the game became a TikTok sensation after users posted videos of their cats interacting with the game. Beyond the online hype, stray is an enchanting, immersive puzzle-platformer with personality and atmosphere. It will be interesting to see how Wedge and his team expand the story and whether or not the feline protagonist will have a speaking role.
