Tallaght man Ryan Gannon called Garda an “ag**k” and “going back to Japan” in a racist tirade.

Ryan Gannon (25) was caught in possession of stolen washing capsules when he directed the tirade of insults at the officer.

Judge Bryan Smyth fined him €200 when he appeared at Dublin District Court.

Gannon, of Donomore Avenue, Tallaght, pleaded guilty to threatening, abusive and offensive behavior and possession of stolen property.

Sergeant Tony Flanagan told the court that Garda Jun Han was on duty in Middle Abbey Street at 10.10am on November 29 when he saw Gannon acting suspiciously in an alleyway.

He stopped and spoke to the defendant, who was found with six packets of washing capsules in a bag, which he could not explain.

Gannon started yelling at Gda Han when dealing with him and became very abusive, calling him “crazy, a Chinese idiot” and telling him to “go back to Japan”.

The court heard that the items he had with him were stolen.

The defendant had previous convictions for crimes including possession of stolen property.

The Garda was “made of pretty stern stuff,” said defense barrister Michael Kelleher.

“It doesn’t matter,” Judge Smyth said.

Mr Kelleher said it was accepted it was “clearly completely inappropriate language” but Gda Han felt it was “more directed at Mr Gannon than himself”.

“He could have legitimately taken a lot more offense than he did,” Mr Kelleher said of the garda.

The court heard Gannon, who struggled with drug problems, was unemployed and on welfare.

Mr Kelleher asked the judge to be as lenient as possible in his punishment.

Judge Smyth fined him €100 for each charge and gave him five months to pay​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
