Gardaí have made their ninth arrest after a car plowed into a group of people during an altercation in a Galway car park over the weekend.

Five people are due to appear in court this afternoon to be charged in connection with the shocking incident which went viral on social media.

Gardaí have been investigating the serious public order incident which occurred in the car park of a shopping center on Headford Road at around 6pm on Sunday.

During the course of the incident, a vehicle appeared to have driven into a group of people at high speed.

A man and a woman were taken to University Hospital Galway for their injuries, which were reportedly not life-threatening.

The incident involved numerous people and was widely shared on social media.

Gardai confirmed today that a teenager is now being questioned in connection with “an incident endangering public order and endangering public order which occurred in Galway city on Sunday, September 10, 2023”.

“A man in his late teens was arrested in Galway last night and is currently being held at a Garda station in the Western Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.”

A Garda spokesman added: “This is the ninth person to be arrested and detained as part of this investigation following a series of search and arrest operations in the Galway area in recent days.”

“Five of the people arrested are expected to appear in Galway District Court this afternoon and face charges in connection with the investigation.”

Gardaí in Galway continue to appeal for anyone who may have witnessed the incident to come forward.

“They are particularly appealing to those who were in the College Road and Headford Road areas of Galway between 5.45pm and 6.45pm on Sunday evening and observed violent behavior to contact them,” the spokesman said.

“In addition, anyone with camera footage, including dashcam footage, in the area is urged to make this available to gardaí.”
