News about gold stamping: The government has expanded the scope of mandatory hallmarking of gold. In a note released Wednesday, the Department of Consumer Affairs’ Department of Consumer Affairs, Nutrition and Public Distribution announced the addition of 56 new counties to the existing network of 288 counties in the country where mandatory hallmarking laws are in place.

The Consumer Affairs Department’s move comes after the government held a meeting with various stakeholders, including jewelers, associations and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on Aug. 17 to discuss the matter. A notification can be made after the conclusion of the deliberations on Thursday. The BIS uses various systems to ensure that quality goods and services reach consumers.
What is a gold hallmark?
The gold hallmark is the exact determination and official recording of the relative precious metal content in jewelry o. A hallmark is a quality mark for gold jewelry.
Currently, the gold hallmark consists of three marks: the BIS hallmark, a number indicating the gold’s purity in karat and fineness, and the six-digit HUID code.
Why is a gold hallmark necessary?
The idea behind mandatory labeling of gold jewelry and other related products is to protect the public from adulteration and force manufacturers to comply with legal fineness standards.
What does the consumer get out of it?
Using the HUID, the consumer can verify the authenticity of gold jewelry by clicking on the “Verify HUID” icon in the BIS Care mobile app. The consumer may also have a piece of hallmarked gold jewelery tested at a BIS approved Testing and Hallmarking Center (AHC) for an examination fee of 200 rupees.
