The Ducati Diavel V4 “three-in-one” motorcycle with built-in “magic” function is the lightest design ever

DUCATI has unveiled its much-anticipated Diavel V4 in New York, bringing together three styles from the legendary motorcycle manufacturer in one motorcycle.
The US Sun spoke to Diavel D4 lead designer Andrea Ferraresi, who was visiting Manhattan from Italy to learn more about what makes this new model unique for drivers.
When asked about the main challenges Ducati faced in developing the new Diavel V4, Ferraresi said: “In 2010, when we decided to enter this new world, which in a way is the cruiser world, we decided to go a Ducati way.
“So not having a copy of a Harley-Davidson, but realizing this [Diavel V4] Specialty bike is a mix of three different bikes.”
These three Ducati styles are Sport, Naked and Cruiser.
Sport emphasizes performance, Naked proudly displays many of the bike’s key mechanical components, and Cruiser offers a relaxed ride.
Ferraresi added: “One of the difficulties we had to face was to adjust the rear tire size, which is kind of mandatory.
“If you want to realize a cruiser, you need this huge rear tire and the agility of the bike.
“We were just about to enter the cruiser segment, but we are Ducati and every Ducati has to be sporty.
“That’s why we decided to call Pirelli and develop a special tire for this bike, so a size of 240mm, but with this profile, which is similar to a MotoGP profile, to give the bike agility.”
Ferraresi added: “Another challenge that we face every time we design a new Diavel is the weight, because when you have a bike of that weight there is a big risk of ending up with a heavy bike but fortunately the close cooperation between us and our engineer, this time we were able to save 13 kilos compared to the previous generation, that’s quite a lot.”
Ferraresi highlighted some of his favorite technical aspects of the Diavel V4: “There’s a kind of magic to the taillight because we’ve managed to have something that isn’t visible unless you turn the bike on.
“So when the bike is parked it doesn’t have a tail light, which I love. Then when you turn it on, it appears as a double C and is created by hundreds of LED dots shaped like ours [Ducati’s] Sign.”
“Another part that I really like is of course the headlight, which in a way is neat, clean and very sensual – a mix of all our design guidelines.
“Last but not least, the foldable passenger footrests.
“When you’re alone, the bike looks like a single seater, but when you have your passenger, you can unfold it and the passenger can enjoy the ride in a comfortable way.”
Ferraresi clarified that Ducati’s new Diavel V4 is designed for more experienced riders.
The design chief recommended that beginners try the company’s Monster or Scrambler models.
