The KC Zoo mourns the loss of its oldest Masai giraffe, Mahali

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Zoo announced Tuesday that its beloved Masai giraffe Mahali has died.
The zoo said Mahali, the oldest Masai giraffe in facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, died on October 19 at the age of 29. She was euthanized due to a worsening of her chronic illness
Illnesses related to their advanced age that no longer responded to treatment.
Mahali was born in July 1994 at the Los Angeles Zoo and arrived in Kansas City in April 1995.
The zoo said Mahali is the largest female in the giraffe herd, measuring over 15 feet tall.
The loss of Mahali leaves four Masai giraffes at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium: Aidan, male, 4 years old, and three females, Makali, 11 years old, Alika, 2 years old, and Chandy, 4 years old.
