The Mets hire Gary Sanchez to clear the roster spot for Tomas Nido

The meads activated Tomas Nido, who has been on the IL since May 10 Thursday afternoon with dry eye syndrome. To clear a squad spot for Nido, catcher Gary Sanchez was intended for use.
The DFA’s signing of Sanchez immediately removes the veteran catcher from the 40-man roster and the Mets now have seven days to either trade him or put him on waivers.
When Nido came back, the Mets had some deadlock at the catcher Francisco Alvarez and Sanchez are both already in the active squad. There was some reasoning that maybe Mark Vientos could be sent down to keep Sanchez as a DH option but instead the veteran Sanchez is the odd man out.
“We have good depth in this position” Buck Showalter called.
Showalter didn’t elaborate on exactly how the split between Nido and Alvarez would work now that Nido is back in the game, and Omar Narvaez will probably still be a few weeks away from his return.
Sanchez, who signed a minor league contract with the Mets and made his club debut on May 21, averaged .167 in six at-bats this season with an RBI and three strikeouts.
