The Pirates of the Caribbean reboot is being developed by Craig Mazin

The Last of Us and Chernobyl showrunner Craig Mazin is working with Pirates of the Caribbean writer Ted Elliot on a strange new concept.

The House of Mouse has been looking for new possibilities for a sequel Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise. For a trait not necessarily tied to a character by its source material, the original film eschewed an iconic film performance by Johnny Depp, who cemented a new pop culture figure in Captain Jack Sparrow. Jack Sparrow continued the series after the trilogy ended, but recent public controversy leaves it unclear whether or not Depp will return.

Disney has worked with producer Jerry Bruckheimer on several reboots that either took place in a different continuity or set in the same universe. CBR.com reports that HBO’s acclaimed showrunner shows Chernobyl And The last of usCraig Mazin, has developed a new one Pirates of the Caribbean for Disney. While we’re talking about the The last of us and the WGA strikes, Mazin says LA Times he agreed to work on one pirates reboot if he could collaborate on it with one of the original film’s writers, Ted Elliot. “We presented it and thought there’s no way to buy it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then him [Ted Elliot] I wrote an amazing script and the strike happened and everyone waited.”

This new development joins the numerous attempts to continue the high seas daring series. Bruckheimer has spoken out about ideas for a reboot that would star Barbie Herself, Margot Robbie, who she thinks could be dead in the water, but Bruckheimer insists it’s still being considered. Late last year he told the Hollywood Reporter: “It’s alive for me. It’s alive for Disney. I’m sure she was disappointed that it didn’t go first – or maybe not because she’s very busy, so maybe pushing things a little further would be a blessing. We believe we will make it. It’s a very powerful story.” He also adds that there is a separate script focusing on a younger cast of characters. “We have a very good script. We developed two of them – one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. Margot Robbie’s needs a little more work. The younger cast is close. Hopefully we get both.”
