You’ve seen bad decisions and selfish referees, but you’ve probably never seen them combine like they did on Friday. And there were consequences.

In the ninth inning of a game between Mississippi Valley State and New Orleans, outfielderDaph Mims went to the plate as Mississippi Valley State’s final out. After two pitches things got weird.

With an even score of 1-1, New Orleans pitcher Trey Usey seemed to miss low with a breaking ball. And by “missing badly,” we mean the pitch looked closer to Mim’s ankles than his knees. However, home plate umpire Reggie Drummer saw things differently, calling the field a strike and eliciting an angry reaction from Mims.

At your normal referee show, drummer Mims would have kicked out as he was jumping up and down and pointing his bat, but the referee decided to do things a little differently. He set up for the next pitch at 1-2 and watched Usey miss badly with a ball breaking down and away.

Just look at this:

The consequences came quickly for Drummer when the Southland Conference, the home team’s conference, announced the next day that it had confirmed that Drummer’s actions violated the rules and had suspended him indefinitely from working on their games.

The full statement:

The Southland Conference is committed to promoting and enforcing the principles and standards of good sportsmanship in connection with all conference activities involving our member institutions, including competitions against non-conference opponents. The conference expects this behavior to be maintained by all game participants.

After a thorough review of the New Orleans and Mississippi Valley State baseball competition on March 10, 2023, the Southland Conference confirmed that the conduct and actions of the home plate umpire were detrimental to the conference and a violation of Section 3’s character and conduct CCA mechanics have been viewed as a handbook for baseball.

As a result, the umpire was removed from the series and suspended indefinitely from Southland Conference baseball games.

The conference will not comment further.

When the statement was released, the clip of Mim’s strike went viral, sparking outrage against drummers. He is no longer allowed to handle Southland Conference games, but the consequences could go beyond that.
