Opened in 1950, the track, which they describe as “too difficult to tame”, is one of the oldest on the circuit and one of the most famous. The unique, egg-shaped, 1.366-mile oval features wide, sweeping turns 1 and 2, but features narrower third and fourth turns to preserve the pond that the original farmland owner had to keep in place when the circuit was built . At the track, known for its numerous racing grooves, long-distance riders like to find out what works for them, and mid-race adjustments are vital.
Top drivers and best bets for the Goodyear 400
Despite never having won at Darlington in his ten career starts, Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson heads into the weekend as… the favorite at BetMGM. Three Toyotas and two Chevrolets follow as six entrants at odds of 10 to 1 or better.
Best odds
• Kyle Larson +500
• Denny Hamlin +600
• Martin Truex Jr. +700
• Tyler Reddick +900
• Kyle Bush +1000
• William Byron +1000
Yahoo Sports’ Nick Bromberg suggests Good mid-range values can be found in Larson’s teammate Chase Elliott (+1400) and Kevin Harvick’s Stewart-Haas Racing Ford (+1400). Elliott has three top five finishes in 12 starts at Darlington, while Harvick has finished in the top 10, finishing 18 times in 30 starts of his career. If you’re looking for a long-term opportunity, Josh Berry, driving his fourth Hendrick Motorsports outing in place of the injured Alex Bowman, heads into the weekend at +6600.
