The Greater Western Sydney Giants will make one last attempt to free small forward Toby Bedford at the AFL Appeal Board on Thursday afternoon.
Bedford’s one-game suspension for rough conduct against Carlton’s Zac Fisher was upheld before the AFL tribunal Monday afternoon, and the Giants appealed the next morning.
The incident was ruled by the Match Review Officer as negligent conduct with medium impact and high contact, resulting in a one-game suspension – Follow the Appeals Committee from 2pm AEST on the blog below!

Should the Giants fail at the appeals committee, Bedford would miss Saturday’s final against St Kilda.
The grounds for appeal to the AFL Appeal Board are:
– An error of law that has a material impact on the court’s decision.
– That the decision was so unreasonable that no reasonable court, having considered the evidence before it, could have come to that decision.
– Classification of the offense as manifestly excessive or insufficient.
– The sanction imposed is obviously excessive or insufficient.
The Giants chose to appeal on the second ground, saying the tribunal’s decision that Bedford’s high contact was “violent” was “so unreasonable that no tribunal acting reasonably, considering the evidence before it, could have come to that decision.” “
Giants representative Ben Ihle said the tribunal did not give due consideration to the biomechanist’s testimonies about Zac Fisher, both of which were heard Monday night.
Ihle said, “It’s impossible to determine the magnitude of the force (of high contact) from the video.”
He later concluded: “The reasons given by the tribunal show that its approach and conclusion regarding the violence were inappropriate.” The decision and reasons showed neither a logical line of thought nor any evidence that this was the case . This decision should be reversed.”
Bedford has proven to be an important member of the Giants in 2023 as his pressure and ability to score are key to the team’s forward mix.
