The first change stores to be introduced offer a smaller return window, while the second adds shipping or restocking fees.

According to recent data from the National Retail Federation, retailers expect an average of $158 billion worth of products sold during the holiday to be returned.

For this reason, almost 60 percent of retailers are making changes to their existing return policies and offering fewer free returns.

Stores like Anthropologie, REI, and LL Bean charge a $6 fee for items being shipped for return.

One reason for the return fee is the cost of excess inventory.

Spencer Kieboom, founder and CEO of a returns management company Pollen Returns, told CNBC that the changes are because costs are rising and margins are shrinking.

“These return policy adjustments are not there to cover costs,” Mr Kieboom said.

“They’re really there to discourage the consumer from returning,” he added.

He also mentioned that returns often don’t end up back on the retailer’s shelves, so they bear the cost.

The additional fee is essentially insurance for struggling retailers to streamline their business.

Another reason for the extra cost is higher UPS and FedEx gas prices, which increase tariffs.

However, J. Crew and a few other retailers are currently offering free extended holiday returns and free exchanges.

Abercrombie & Fitch adds a $7 fee to use their return service.

The enterprise stated on its website that the exchange is free, but the return service is not.

Earlier this year, Bath & Body Works changed their return policy, limiting it to $250 within 90 days for unreceived returns or exchanges.

It may be helpful to read the policy online before making any large purchases to avoid unwanted charges.

Finally, a useful tip is to shop in person.
