Was “Daisy Jones & the Six” inspired by Fleetwood Mac?

Riley Keough and Sam Claflin’s dueling frontman antics on “Daisy Jones & the Six” have sparked several theories among audiences as to which real-life, classic ’70s rock figures actually inspired these characters. Many fans have pointed the finger at similarities between former bandmates Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, raising the question of where “Daisy Jones & the Six” was inspired Fleetwood Mac or another real band?

author Taylor Jenkins Reid, whose book Daisy Jones introduced to the world, has previously detailed multiple sources of inspiration in her writing, including rock, disco, and the overall Laurel Canyon scene. But Fleetwood Mac was always at the center of Reid’s mind. “I started with the seed of Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham and Fleetwood Mac.” said the author in a previous interview moderated by her publisher. But as she researched and drew creative inspiration from a slew of ’70s stars, she credited Bruce Springsteen, The Eagles, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Tom Petty and Crosby, Stills and Nash alongside Fleetwood Mac .

Reid admits that she began her writing and research process for Daisy Jones & the Six by listening to the band’s historic album Rumors and looking at a “ton” of archived Fleetwood Mac interviews. “It was the beginning for me because it’s an album, but… it’s also a soap opera,” Reid said. “The stories that unfold between Stevie and Lindsey. And the things that went on between Christine McVie and John McVie were really fascinating and it shows in the music. So I started there.”

In terms of performances, Fleetwood Mac’s 1997 reunion on MTV’s The Dance also provided a lot of inspiration. As does Stevie Nick’s “warm and intimate, yet cryptic” rendition of “Landslide” alongside former bandmate and lover Lindsey Buckingham, whom she first saw as a young teenager. “He was clearly madly in love with her. And the way she smiled at him, the way she seemed so comfortable in his gaze, she must love him too.” Reid wrote for the Hello Sunshine website. “Imagine my surprise when my mother later explained that although they had once dated, they were no longer together. That totally defied logic for me. But they love each other! I saw it with my own eyes!”

Buckingham and Springsteen were sources of inspiration for co-star Claflin. The actor told diversity He initially had trouble identifying Billy’s sound and actually auditioned by singing Elton John’s “Your Song” “terribly”. But as production progressed, Claflin was able to tap into contemporary musicians, including White Denim’s James Petralli: “I don’t make a very good impression of him at all. But that was sort of my guide. And then I got more confident and started playing around with my own style,” Claflin said.

While the story was initially inspired by Fleetwood Mac, the cast and crew picked up rock singers who were around the band in the 1970s, with the help and inspiration of more contemporaries than fans might realize.
