It turns out that anything can happen on Hollywood’s biggest night, including the phrase “Cocaine bear, leave Malala alone!”

As if Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai hadn’t had enough, the Pakistani activist found herself near the end of this year’s ceremony thanks to host Jimmy Kimmel (and cocaine bear). And the internet is anything but happy about their engagement.

After an oddly prolonged presentation featuring a husky Elizabeth Banks and the titular star of her latest directorial effort cocaine bearKimmel took his hosting duties to the crowd and asked the evening’s illustrious guests some “fan-submitted” questions.

Crowdwork at awards shows is routinely awkward, and the celebrities forced to attend often look like they’re about to die. That didn’t stop Kimmel from nagging Yousafzai (and later Colin Farrell) with stupid, borderline offensive questions.

After scaring off the academy intern who was forced to dress up as a bear, Kimmel decided to ask Yousafzai, who represented her nominated documentary stranger at the gateher thoughts on Hollywood dumbest scandal with a former One Direction member.

“Your work for human rights and education for women and children is an inspiration,” Kimmel began. “As the youngest Nobel Prize winner in history, I was wondering if Harry Styles spat on Chris Pine?”

“I’m only talking about peace,” Yousafzai answered after a short pause.

Yousafzai handled the question like a pro. Twitter, on the other hand, angered in favor of the producer. Allegedly, asking such a savvy woman about a silly, made-up fight between two famous men was demeaning and offensive to users.

Finally, Yousafzai’s Twitter account joined this diplomatic embassy.

Kimmel also ended his interaction with Yousafzai by making fun of her name — referring to her as “Malalaland” — which might not be a good idea if you’re white. It’s also just not very funny. It certainly didn’t help that the next fan request to Farrell made fun of his Irish accent. I’m sorry you both had to go through this!
