WATCH: Nick Sirianni makes sure Shane Steichen knows he threw the challenge flag

In the second quarter of the Eagles’ third and final preseason game against the Colts Thursday night, rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson eluded the pressure from Philly long enough to give his tight end Kylen Granson a throw in what was initially thought to be a finish and win 11 yards.

At this point in the camp, the play was completely irrelevant. But it didn’t matter. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni saw the ball bounce off the ground and immediately threw the challenge flag to make sure Indy’s new head coach — and his former offensive coordinator — Shane Steichen saw.

A little too much for a meaningless preseason game? Perhaps. But then again, it’s a funny moment of laughter for anyone who saw it at the stadium or at home, and a highlight for an annual exhibition notorious for never being interesting.

And hey, he won the challenge too. The ball came back.

“I really wanted to raise the red flag,” said Sirianni with a smile after the game. “I should have gotten help from repeat help, but I was so — me knew what Shane did. I knew what he did. He wanted to run the ball fast so I threw it. We had eye contact and a fun back and forth on this piece.

Hey, it’s preseason. It doesn’t really matter, and a little gaming spirit like that won’t hurt anyone. Worst-case scenario, it doesn’t land as Richardson flaps his wings in the end zone after the Colts scored against a string of third and fourth strikers.

He’s the starter…

Anyway, Richardson hit 6 of 17 passes for 78 yards against the Eagles reserve.

And now that the preseason is finally over, the focus is on the first week in New England in a few weeks and finalizing the 53-man roster for it.

“There won’t be any fun days ahead,” Sirianni said of the decision on the looming wave of final cuts.

“The better the squad, the harder decisions you have to make and we’re going to have a lot of hard decisions to make. The guys who ended up being eliminated made it difficult for us.”
