West Coast Eagles, non-AFL standard, harsh criticism, punches, tackles, Adelaide Crows, Taylor Walker, 10 goals, Adam Simpson, Dermott Brereton

The West Coast Eagles are simply “not an AFL team,” says football great Dermott Brereton, warning the club has many more 100-point drubbings ahead of them.

The Eagles were knocked out of the park by Adelaide on Saturday as the Taylor Walker-led Crows scored 27 goals in their 122-point win.

“I’m really worried that you have a team where the hardest part of the season hasn’t come and we’re taking 100-point loss after 100-point loss with no end in sight that it’s there there’s an improvement,” Brereton said on Fox Footy.

“Every week there are a few players who don’t meet the AFL standard who come out.

“Let us be kind to them and say so, and they are far from it. We hope they achieve it.

“(But) they’re just not an AFL team.

“The hardest part of the year is not over yet – there are many more 100-point losses to come.

We can’t have a team that doesn’t score 100 points every two weeks.

“And it will happen again.”

The Eagles had recorded just 12 100-point wins in their club’s history before Saturday’s clash – now they’ve had three in the last seven weeks, against Carlton, Hawthorn and now Adelaide.

But Brereton and his Fox Footy analyst Cameron Mooney don’t think coach Adam Simpson is to blame — it’s the staff.

“Vince Lombardi couldn’t get more out of this team,” said Brereton.

“They have no cattle in the park.”

The Eagles were decimated by injury for two straight seasons and had to make six team changes to face Adelaide.

Then they lost Jake Waterman to illness before the jump and had to reshuffle the deck all over again.

“I’ve never been to a club where only 25 players were available,” Mooney said.

“This is exceptional.

“You have to think about that before we sit down and start throwing darts.

“I 100% think they should (stay with Adam Simpson).

“He’s been at the bottom before and built them into a Premier League team. He knows what he is doing.

“They need to train their fitness staff.”

Of concern, the West Coast WAFL side also suffered a 100-point deficit on Saturday – their fourth in nine games this year as they sit bottom of the table with a winless percentage of just 31.69.

A “frustrated” Simpson admitted he had little, if anything, to salvage positive from the wreckage of his side’s 122-point defeat at the hands of Adelaide.

It was West Coast’s heaviest defeat to Adelaide of all time. The dreadful defeat was the 11th in a miserable record streak for the club that has anchored the club at the bottom of the rankings.

“Tonight isn’t part of the plan, I don’t want anyone to think that’s acceptable, but we knew we’d take a few steps back before we moved on,” Simpson said.

“It’s a challenge for us at the moment with our availability, but that doesn’t excuse the effort.

“We try to be as resilient as possible. We knew we were understaffed in some areas, but that just wasn’t good enough.

“We expect more.

“I’m frustrated and angry.

“Today was not an education day for us.”

The Eagles go into the farewell round with just one win of the season, but as a small glimmer of hope, Simpson reckons “five or six” players will be left off the injury list after the break.

“That should give us a little more determination and experience and promote our synergies,” said the coach.

“Right now it’s all the rage, it’s really difficult to achieve that (synergies) but that’s no excuse.”
