nope is a mammoth attempt at storytelling that will leave you discovering something new with every rewatch. Dense and nuanced, it addresses several themes that develop around humanity’s relationship to spectacle. Peele has discussed this in several interviews and to keep this as succinct as possible, please allow us to paraphrase this.

nope turns It follows two siblings, Emerald (Keke Palmer) and OJ (Daniel Kaluuya), who are investigating the mysterious death of their father who was struck by a falling coin from the sky. The couple quickly realize that their father’s death was the result of a giant UFO hovering over the family ranch, and quickly set out to capture the “Oprah Shot” as proof of the existence of extraterrestrial life forms.

However, since it’s an incredibly sneaky UFO floating in the sky, the siblings aren’t the only ones to spot it, and Ricky (Steven Yeun), the owner of a Western-style attraction, is also trying to catch the UFO on camera .

During one of Ricky’s shows, the first obvious case of humanities obsession is suggested by the spectacle. Ricky lures the UFO to one of his shows, and while successful, it ends in complete annihilation. The UFO, soon identified as a dangerous predatory alien, wipes out Ricky and the audience, leaving no one alive. The alien continues on his path of bloodshed, killing a reporter in the process, but despite all these deaths, the siblings keep pushing for the cash injection.

Faced with something utterly dangerous, every character we encounter is obsessed with catching the money shot. The spectacle is too captivating for us to avert our eyes. Almost like a car accident on the freeway, unaffected traffic drives by slowly without taking their eyes off the devastation. This phenomenon partially inspired Peele’s creation nope.

Another undercurrent evident throughout the film is the whitewashing of the story. The siblings are revealed to be the great-great-grandchildren of the black jockey who appeared in the first recorded film in history.

Photographer Eadweard Muybridge filmed a two-second clip titled 1877 the horse in motion The clip earned Muybridge the title of “Cinema’s Founding Father,” but what about the person who appeared in the clip? The black jockey was lost in history, no one knew his name. Peele suggested that the Jockey was the first movie star in history, something that should be known on par with Muybridge.

In the film, OJ and Emerald don’t want to be erased from history and aim to be remembered as the people who captured the alien who was named Jean Jackety, after one of the siblings’ favorite horses.
