“Today we lost an icon,” Lizzo said before coolly singing the song’s intro. “And I didn’t allow myself to be sad. I didn’t allow myself to cry about it. And I don’t want to do that now because I’d much rather celebrate the incredible legend that Tina Turner is. As a black girl in a rock band, I wouldn’t exist without the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

Lizzo hid her feelings behind sparkling sequins, big Tina-esque hair and a haunting chant, “There’s no rock ‘n’ roll without Tina Turner,” Lizzo then ripped off the bottom half of her costume and worked her way into the classic and recognizable ” Proud Mary dance.
