An alleged attack on a young girl in Navan, Co. Meath may be linked to an earlier attack on a 14-year-old boy in the town.

Five boys were arrested last week after a video of a teenager being assaulted went viral.

But now Gardai have confirmed they are aware of a second alleged assault that occurred last week.

It happened last Wednesday and sources describe it as “alleged minor assault” which has not yet resulted in any arrests.

Senior sources said an adult woman linked to the victim of the original assault was involved in an incident involving a teenage girl.

“Since then, the mood in the whole city has been heated. It would be a great coincidence if what happened two days after the infamous incident was left unconnected.

“All of this is very sensitive at the moment and Gardai are trying to ensure there are no further incidents,” said a senior source.

The Irish Independent revealed earlier in the week that a dispute on the Snapchat news outlet has sparked “significant tension” that has sparked last week’s heinous scenes.

Video of the attack, which sparked political outrage and shocked the nation, shows the 14-year-old boy exiting Beaufort College campus, followed by a group of other students.

A student hits the boy on the head, encouraging others to attack him from behind. The boy tries to escape but falls to the ground where he is repeatedly kicked, punched and kicked by up to five other students as he tries to get to safety.

The incident is being investigated as a hate crime.

Officially, Gardai is treating the second alleged assault as a separate issue, but sources say the incidents are “very likely linked”.

“There are no immediate plans for an arrest in connection with the second incident,” a source said.

Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating an alleged attack on a young girl in Navan, Co Meath.

They say the incident reportedly happened on Wednesday morning, May 17, in the Trim Road area.

A Garda spokesman added that no medical attention was required and that investigations into the matter were “ongoing”.

Earlier this week we announced that the five boys arrested last Friday have received lengthy personal safety advice from Gardai after they received abuse and threats online.

Senior sources said the advice included a recommendation that the male youth “avoid social media for at least a few months”.

All five were arrested on Friday and then released without charge after being questioned by special officers about their role in last week’s Monday afternoon attack, which was videotaped, went viral on the internet and eventually made international headlines.
