Yellowjackets Season 2 trailer ushers in darkness after this tragic finale

The Yellowjackets have brought back the darkness.

The trailer for the highly anticipated second season of Showtime’s hit survival drama Yellow jackets features the adult characters who have a realization: there was something dark out there in the wilderness – and they brought it home and are still dealing with it 25 years later.

In his first season Yellow jackets followed two timelines: the past, when a plane crash left the high school football team known as the Yellowjackets stranded in the wilderness for 19 months in 1996; and the present to show how the survivors – played by Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress and Christina Ricci – do 25 years later.

The trailer shows how the second season will progress in both timelines. But this season, the show will also delve into the new timeline 19 months after the crash, as the young characters are rescued and begin to unpack the trauma of their time in the woods. The first season ended in heartbreaking tragedy, with (spoiler alert!) the Death of star player Jackie (Ella Purnell)who froze to death in the wild. And the ending hinted at a lot more trauma, as cannibalism loomed over the young survivor from the show’s opening minutes.

“I have a feeling the shit is about to get a lot worse out here,” says young Van (Liv Hewson) as the trailer’s final moments build on the promise of the series.

The official first look also reveals more about the new characters that will be played Simon Kessellas the older Lottie (Courtney Eaton plays the younger version); Lauren Ambrose as an older van; And Elijah Wood as a new character named Walter, a citizen detective who bonds with today’s Misty (Ricci).

The story goes on

The big catch in the trailer is that the adult characters are finding out Lottie’s whereabouts (after she was committed to a mental hospital in Switzerland after the crash, Misty shares), and some of them seem to want to find her to deal with the darkness risen again.

The footage confirms that Natalie (Lewis) does indeed survive her kidnapping, which took place in the final minutes of the finale. And there’s also a brief moment showing the much-anticipated reunion between adult Taissa (Cypress) and adult Van (Ambrose) — after Taissa says, “I’m losing my mind.” Meanwhile, adult Shauna (Lynskey ) Worries if she and her husband Jeff (Warren Cole) will be caught for killing Adam (Peter Gadiot) in the first season, and even confronts her daughter (Callie Sadecki).

The official logline for Season 2 reads: “Two months have passed since Shauna gave Jackie the cold shoulder – with disastrous results. With their growing hunger and fear, the tension among our yellowjackets has only grown. The harsh conditions of winter are intensifying by the day, and the psyches of our survivors are deteriorating just as quickly. Threatened by the darkness of the wild – and the haunting reminders of it in the present – our former state champions will be forced to make impossible choices. As they are confronted with the terrifying truth of what it means to survive, the real nightmare for each of them will be finding out who they are – and what they are willing to sacrifice to stay alive.”

Season 2 also stars Sophie Nélisse, Jasmine Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Steven Krueger and Kevin Alves.

The Emmy-nominated Showtime and Entertainment One series — which has a 100 percent freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season — is part survival epic, psychological horror story, and coming-of-age drama. The series is executive produced married creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, along with fellow showrunner Jonathan Lisco. Creative Engine’s Drew Comins is executive producing with Ameni Rozsa, Sarah L. Thompson and Karyn Kusama directing the pilot.

The trailer also marks the release of Florence + The Machine’s exclusive new single “Just A Girl”, a cover of No Doubt’s iconic 1995 song, available to download and stream now. The single is produced by Florence Welch and Mark Bowen of IDLES.

“I’m such a big fan of Yellow jackets and that era of music, and that song in particular was a big influence on me growing up, so when I was asked to interpret it in a ‘deeply disturbing’ way for the show, I was thrilled,” Welch said in one Statement about the cooperation. “We tried to really add some horror elements to this iconic song to fit the tone of the show. And as someone whose first musical love was pop punk and Gwen Stefani, it was a dream job.”

Yellow jackets season two debuts on March 24th for all Showtime subscribers on-demand and via streaming, before making her on-air debut on Sunday, March 26 at 9pm ET/PT.
